Emergence of Turkish literature and poetry for children dates back to the years following the Constitutional Period The Second (1908) in the history of the Ottoman Empire. The first anthology Çocuk Şiirleri was written by Ibrahim Alaattin in 1911. Following this were Cocuklarimxza Neşideler by Ali Ulvi in 1912 and Şermin by Tevfik Fikret. Tevfik Fikret ranks the first among the Turkish poets, who wrote poems for children, with his most accomplished and literary works addressing to psychology of children. Poetry for children can be more beneficial and effective if formed after undergoing various periods of life, and thus reaching a certain level of thought. Likewise, Tevfik Fikret revealed Şermin in 1914, one year before his death, when he had definite ideas about children. Although placed together short parts, wording of Şermin reflects unity of theme and is in conformity with feelings and thoughts of children. Tevfik Fikret aimed at a contemporary education in Şermin, a syllabic poem written in a plain language when compared to those of its age. Fikret wished to teach useful things to children by means of playing games and singing songs. Şermin is the first work in Turkish literature which underlined importance of nursery schools. Affection to parents, sisters and brothers; vital importance of education and culture; love for nature and animals; futility of superstitious beliefs; significance of science and technology; patriotism and citizenship; necessity of working; benevolence and solidarity are the main ideas handled. Anot her important aspect of Şermin, in which Fikret expressed his observations and experiments he had gained during his years of teaching and administrating, is that it focuses on the elements of love, freedom and education for children. From this point of view, Şermin may be considered the first orijinal work in literature for children.tr_TR
